Apple Polyphenols: extracts from immature fruit of the apple, which contain procyanidins (polyphenol enriched) as the major ingredients, are known to inhibit histamine release from mast cells. When mast cells degranulate, they release histamine. The active ingredients in apple polyphenols inhibit the first key step in the allergic reaction medicated by mast cells. A study by The Chinese University of Hong Kong looked at how apple polyphenols impacted the production of SOD and catalase in fruit flies. The study investigated the effect of apple polyphenols on the lifespan of fruit flies and their interaction with gene expressions of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT). The results showed the mean life span was significantly extended by 10% in fruit flies fed the apple polyphenol diet.
